The Ultimate Men Skin Care Routine

The Ultimate Men Skin Care Routine

There is a huge difference between caring for our looks, and obsessing about our looks. Caring for our looks is part of personal grooming, and in that sense, a greater socio-cultural purpose. We care for our looks because it could make us feel better about ourselves and more comfortable in our own skin. It could also benefit us with regard to our career advancement— for believe it or not, studies do show that looks matter in the workplace[1]—and more importantly, in scoring a date. Nevertheless, whatever the reason, we are all aware that caring for our looks isn’t such a bad thing, in fact, it’s a good thing.  Approximately 80% of the male population in Asia claim that they care about their looks[2]. The question is, are you one of them?

Caring for our looks comprises of major aspects:  male fitness (having a healthy body) and men skin care. As for this article, I will be talking solely about men skin care and the ultimate daytime and night-time regimen all men should aspire for to achieve a clean and spotless skin.

DAYTIME REGIMEN

It’s your typical Sunday morning. Rise and shine! You wash your face and head out. EEEENGK! Washing your face in the morning is not enough to protect your skin from the sun’s rays and the pollution that awaits you. Especially in a tropical country like Malaysia, it’s very easy to get soaked in sweat and get burned from the sun’s scorching rays. Therefore, before leaving the house make sure to wash your face with water AND a gentle cleanser. After which, you move on to toning your face. Toning is an essential part of men’s daytime regimen because it restores the natural pH level of the skin. It also removes leftover grease and dirt from the skin (that your cleanser was unable to wash off). The next step is to moisturize. Moisturizing is essential even for men who have oily skin. This is because oily skin does not equate to a moisturized skin. The last step of the daytime regimen is to apply sunscreen. Sunscreen protects the skin from rays of the sun and other sources of heat. The diagram below shows a simple  4-step process.

NIGHT-TIME REGIMEN

Men’s night-time regimen is quite straightforward. It’s a lot like the daytime regime except you skip the sunscreen and you apply a face serum of your preference before moisturizing. Face serums are highly concentrated ointments that treat the face of a specific issue. Serums are most commonly for anti-ageing, but they could also be for whitening, oil control, and texture redefinition. In summary, the process is going to be like this:
